History of the T-shirt

T-shirts, tee shirts, t shirts don't we all love them. They're one
of the most popular articles of clothing that are worn globally. T-
shirts originated as a derivative of undergarments worn by women
after the Victorian dress reform era. Men became inspired to create
their counterpart undergarments called the “union suit”.. These
union suits further evolved into t-shirts that were made to be
exclusively worn underneath clothing.
Around the early 1900's t-shirts were marketed exclusively to single
men by Cooper Underwear Company. These single men did not have wives
to replace and sew on buttons that fell of of their night garments.
So Cooper Underwear saw a viable market and became very successful.
Later, t-shirts were adopted by the U.S. Military. Their purpose
was to be worn as underwear underneath the Navy uniform, around the
time of the Spanish American war. After the Second World War it was
not uncommon to see veterans casually pairing t-shirts with their
uniform pants.
However, their popularity sky-rocked after Marlon Brando donned one
in A streetcar called Desire. Here, t-shirts made a public
appearance on a large scale. Thus, they were considered a sexy
garment that could be worn by men outside the house.

1960's Tie-dye: Hippies were inspired by the Nigerian way of dying
cotton fabrics by tying them into knots and dying them a variety of
colors. This was practiced by the Yoruba and Hausa tribes for
centuries in Nigeria.
1980's Hyper color shirts- This trend incorporated the use of
thermochromic pigment that change colors depending on how hot and
cold the material became. This trend was quite popular in the '80s
but begin to diminish in the early 90's when the demand for hyper
color shirts decreased.
Today, t-shirts are seen as the ultimate form of self-expression.
They are used to spread political views, pop culture ideas, religion,
etc. T-shirts have also become good marketing tools. A good quality
t-shirt with vivid colors can announce to the world who you are.
